I'm sure that there are lots of people better qualified than I am to answer your questions, but here goes:

If you call 500 of the largest companies in the world "one basket" then yeah. I am sure you are aware, as an aggregete, the S&P500 has outperformed almost every other investment over the long run. Unless you know for sure the next Microsoft (and if you do, please email it so I can get in on it). For the 80% (or more) of people who don't want to put in the hard work necessary to MAYBE better the 500 Index, it is simple effective way to participate in the market.
