a) Buy index funds (possibly throgh ETF or TIAA-CREF considering the low starting point...Vanguard also excellent, but some additional costs)

b) Go ahead and buy stocks, but be aware of the risks. As long as you buy at a discount brokerage the cost isn't to significant.
