IMO most retired couples could manage nicely with 1 car. You need 2 cars during working years, because you're going 2 different directions every day, but in retiremnet, you can manage to share unless 1 of you has a daily schedule that takes him/her away from home leaving the other one stranded.

In my own case, when I retire we'll probably still keep two cars. I can't imagine my husband (who retired last year) giving up his van, and there are times when you just would rather use a car than a van.
