As Dupont and POETs have cellulosic ethanol plants under construction in Iowa, studies are underway to increase efficiency of collection of corn stover to feed the plants.

Article reports improvements reducing baling cost to $52/ton from $91/ton. Improvements included smaller field area, higher density bales, and reduced use of machinery.

Square bales 3- by 4- by 8-feet, weighing about 1 ton each are preferred. A 30 mm gal ethanol plant will require 900,000 bales per year.
