In a substantially weak defense of crass' position, I do recall hearing rumors and ideas to the effect that joining the Guard was the way to avoid being sent to 'Nam back in those days. The memories are hazy, and I won't try to support them because I can't.

At the time, I was a teen, a candidate for the USAF Academy, and the war was going on but I was too young. Since I was pointed for the AF Academy I didn't consider that these "avoid service" schemes applied to me anyway. After I wrecked a motorcycle and wrecked my knee, they clearly didn't apply to me.

A lot of crap floated around during those days.

All that said, if crass wants to make these assertions and provide no support, then the value of his arguments (and, hence, his position) is clearly to be seen.
