In addition, despite their widespread use, and description as “wonder drugs” statin medications do not extend life for the majority of people who take them.

WFIW, as a stand alone statement this might very well be correct. Statins aren't drugs that're in the same category as, say, high blood pressure meds, insulin for type I diabetics, anti-rejection meds for organ transplantees etc. etc......i.e. a life-saving medication that prevents death in the here and now (by definition, right?)......but rather an attempt to respond to modifiable risk factors/predictors of future events. Not tremendously unlike fissure sealants/fluoride applications in a dentist's office, seat-belt use for every car journey, supplement use alongside a nutritious diet, smallpox/MMR vaccinations, bike helmets (a profile of my own rap-sheet......well, not the MMR)etc. etc. if you think about it.

Still, given that most rational folk wouldn't discard their seat belts etc., using this argument is a bit of a crock. It applies to statin use also.
