The recent thread on this board regarding anthropomorphic global warming reads, in significant part, like textbook Rove. Take your greatest argumentative weakness--in this case, having absorbed far less information with far less understanding than thousands of experts in the field--and turn the tables. Label your adversaries with that precise brush. "Cherry-picking! Conspiracy theorists!"Eventually, most thoughtful people abandon the fight--just like most thoughtful Republicans eventually abandoned elected office at the federal level. It's simply too tiresome to try to reason, over and over, with demagoguery. That cedes the playing field to intransigent partisans, who then get to redefine the rules of the game. Thus the prominence of Tea Partiers, who also get ample help on TMF boards--as modest in reach as the latter may be.Odds are that, if this post draws any replies, the first will accuse me of some version of ad hominem or "diseased" thinking. Thus the beat goes on . . . . Rove made a fool of himself last fall, but his working twist on primitive political psychology still holds great sway. The beauty of his approach is that it weds the energy of true believers--including, no doubt, a number of posters on this board--with cynical manipulators to create a sufficient critical mass.Steve
