In my mind, the undergrad degrees (Bachelor or Associate) are really the coming-of-age ceremony, the one where hundreds of 23-year-olds stream across the stage as Grandma and Cousin Frank cheer them on. Masters degrees, although I don't have one yet, seem more vocational, earned less for personal growth than for career mobility (I'm sure there are exceptions). If I had something more pressing, and it sounds like you do, I wouldn't be too upset about missing the ceremony.
