In the early 80's, I had an E-5 (married with children) who made more delivering pizza part time than he did in the Navy. The pay scales were "fixed" to catch up with inflation, and legislation worded to the effect that there would be indexing of the military pay scales to the cost of living to prevent this from occuring in the future. Unfortunately, neither President Bush nor Clinton have kept up the govt's end of the bargain on this, and pay has been allowed to languish again, even as deployments continue to multiply. (Last I heard we were STILL in Haiti - can we say 'exit strategy' boys and girls?)

If $6 Million is a drop in the military budget, certainly some of the $5 Trillion spent on the War on Poverty could have been used to ensure that our junior service members do not join the ranks of the poor.
