In the good old days before e-file you were extremely lucky if you got a refund in a month, and 6-8 weeks was the norm.

Never my experience. Maybe because I usually filed early - by January 31. If I got the return in the mail by Friday or Saturday my direct deposit refund was issued by the 3rd Friday after that. Considering two or three days to reach the service center and then their having to handle the paper return I always thought that was an excellent turnaround. Probably helped a lot that I beat the flood of returns in March and April.

My returns then were pretty straight forward but did include Schedules A, B, D and Form 8606. Only change the last two years is I don't itemize anymore.
