In the good old days before e-file you were extremely lucky if you got a refund in a month, and 6-8 weeks was the norm.

Never my experience. Maybe because I usually filed early - by January 31.

No doubt. Just curious. Did you not have to wait for a W-2, or did you just have a well-organized, thoughtful employer? We don't even open our VITA site until the first Saturday in February since we want to give the clients a fighting chance to have received all their required documents.

I was at processing centers a few times during filing season pre-e-file. Paper everywhere, tons of it! 24/7 shifts in all functions. And God help you if a refund didn't get out before interest kicked in. It was the service center equivalent of a revenue officer letting a statute blow.

If I got the return in the mail by Friday or Saturday my direct deposit refund was issued by the 3rd Friday after that.

My recollection was also pre-EFT, although that only cuts a week from the time. I'm also not sure what the effect on time has been related to the expanded use of the IRS as a Federal collection agency. There are numerous offsets to non-tax accounts now available. That's all done now by FMS after the IRS releases the refund.
