In this city I would have to pony up at least $50K for a downpayment and $2K/month for mortgage payments, plus association fees, taxes, and upkeep just for a small 1 or 2 BD condo. Currently I pay $500/month (which is admittedly low even for most renters here) for a nice studio that somebody else maintains.

FWIW, with good credit these most people can get no money down loans.
