In what order of priority is it best for us to save for our retirement?

I think AJ answered the questions very well. Just wanted to add that I would balance withdrawals from my 401k and Roth to a) minimize taxes long term (ie, not deplete either account early in retirement) and b) reduce the impact of required minimum distributions from your 401k when you reach your 70's.

One option might be to take money out of the 401k until you reach the 15% or 25% bracket and then use Roth withdrawals to meet your remaining expenses.
