Infineon deals Frea chip to ZTE

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Infineon Technologies Inc. gained a key China win for its 'Frea' Resilient Packet Ring controller chip, as ZTE Corp. has agreed to use the chip in future systems in which RPR will be used in enterprise fiber-based applications.

While ZTE will sell equipment to carriers, the design calls for managed services for survivable Ethernet in the enterprise.

The Frea chip integrates an RPR Medium Access Controller, a Packet-over-Sonet framer, a XAUI interface, and serializer/deserializer. Srinivas Nimmagadda, director of marketing and applications engineering for optical networking at Infineon, said that the design win shows that RPR is more flexible than a simple Sonet replacement. ....
