Instant gratification vs. delayed gratification. It is hard to put off the things we want, but I can't tell you how good it is to be debt free (other than mortgage). Once you pay off that debt and start plunking down that money every month into the brokerage account those four years of struggle will be well worth it. And, once your debt free, you'll hear all of your friends say - "Oh, your so lucky you don't have all the bills I have." Just tell them the four keys to yor success - 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001. The four years of your life that it took to pay off all of your debt. Don't forget any bonus or raise can be used to pay off the debt sooner.
