Instead of speculating, ask 3 or 4 LTC people to comment. There are many differences in policies. Most people like their policies - sort of like their Congressperson.

I happen to be biased toward Genworth.

If possible try and talk to people who have received benefits for all the companies you are considering. Low price is not everything.

You say mother has some assets - there is a window in terms of net worth where LTC insurance makes sense. Lower network and people cannot afford a policy that will take care of them. High network and you should skip insurance.

A person we are responsible for is in Assisted Living and her costs are $60K a year.

About 90% of the people entering nursing homes are out in 100 days. Many die, some get better. So as the LTC sales person says 75% of people will need nursing care, keep in mind most will not need it very long.

In my opinion the worst situation would be to have a stroke which is physically disabling, but without mental impairment. This is the case with the person we are responsible for. She in now 11 years since the stroke.

I am very pleased with the in home care options under our Genworth policy. They will install elevators, special beds, all kinds of things to keep us out of a facility.
