Intercst asks the key question. I had disability insurance through my employer for most of my career. Employees paid the modest premium which made any benefits tax free.

Truly insurance you hope you never have to use, but I knew someone who put three kids through college thanks to disability insurnace after a severe heart condition left him unable to work. So when I went to a new employer a few years before retirement who didn't provide disability I made sure I bought it on my own. I was able to buy at a reasonable price through a professional association I belonged to.
