intercst:"1948 Donora smog"Obviously, intercst forgot to note that this was INDUSTRIAL pollution. It didn't shut down coal power production. In fact, in the 1970s, Natural Gas abundance suddenly ran out. Caused the depressions of 1973/94..that, and of course, the fact that the US had reached 'peak oil production' in 1971, and was now dependent upon OPEC for oil.....and OPEC decided to 'withhold oil'....And we had a 80% market crash in '73''74......before intercst was even working. The result of the NG shortage was a MAJOR building campaign to build and put into use DOZENS of new coal burning power plants. Coal use skyrocketed in the late 70s and 80s....NG hit 3 times what it is today...hit $15/mcf....heating bills sent elderly to the poorhouse. If they had NG or electricity...well.....'skyrocketing' utility bills...if their utility used NG.....those on coal were happy...Despite intercst's liberal fabrications of 'concerns' about 'clean air'.....http://americanhistory.si.edu/powering/past/h3main.htmOh...and we went on a nuclear power plant building binge as well....we realized we had to be 'energy independent' (joke joke - we never will be ever again in your or my lifetime).....So....we built 'cleaner' coal plants by the dozens..built nukes by the dozens.....So much for intercsts use of Goofy's Revised History of the World.t
