Interesting. Here's a quote from Jeffery Schmidt, the Oberfurher of Competition with the Federal Trade Commission, about Tesco's competetive role in the U.S. Grocery market."We at the FTC welcome Tesco's entrance into the U.S. grocery market. God knows we need some competition here, seeing as how we have, like, only 3 grocery chains of any real size right now: Whole Foods, Wild Oats and Piggly Wiggly.... and two of THEM actually expect us to let them merge! That'll be the day! Anyway, we at the FTC hope that some day, some innovative company in America will wake up and recognize that you can actually make money selling FOOD in this country to PEOPLE! Maybe smaller stores like Wal-Mart, Safeway, Winn-Dixie and K-Roger will eventually step up and challenge behemoths like Wild Oats, but for now we at the FTC are thrilled that the British are coming. The bottom line: What we need right now is a supermarket willing to compete in the dwindling area of selling food to people who need food."
