Hello all. I have not yet opened a Roth IRA account, but would like to do so by April 16th through an online discount broker. An Ameritrade representative told me that the April 16th deadline is satisifed as long as my mailed application and contribution check are postmarked by April 16th (even though Ameritrade will not process the application and open/fund the IRA account until after April 16th).

Does anyone know if this is true? Can I simply mail an application and check by the 16th, or do I need to have an IRA opened and funded by the 16th? Might different brokers have different rules on that, or is it an IRS rule?

I know many online brokers offer "express account opening" through direct account transfers from one's bank account, but I may just go the mail route if that is available.

Any help for a beginning investor greatly appreciated!
