Is it lawyers who want another lucrative field of practice (e.g., gay divorce, gay custody disputes, gay will and estate planning, etc.).

Speaking as a lawyer, divorce attorneys have plenty of work from heterosexual couples. Ironically this might actually work against lawyers who represent gay couples in defending contested wills by family members of one of those persons in the relationship who until the death of that person had nothing to do with them and afterwards dispute the property disposition by attacking the legitimacy of the relationship between the gay/lesbian couple, adoptions and child custody issues, division of property after termination of the relationship, health care benefits etc. You see, the money comes into play when the law is either unclear, unfair or does not address the subject matter at all. Lawyers profit on conflict, take away the conflict and you eliminate that particular profit center, so to speak.
