Is it really surprising that a traditional group would support traditional gender roles? The current secular trends aren't working out tremendously well (high divorce rates, high single parent homes etc).

Slavery was also a long held tradition, and African Americans haven't done particularly well since slavery was abolished. Is that a reason to re-establish slavery?

Any couple may establish whichever gender roles they choose within their household. But for a rabbi to decide that women are ill-suited to learning and work, and try to dictate the roles of women in society, is no different from slavery.
