Retired in Panama in 2006. Government control healthcare, doctors trained in US and we built a house on the beach for less than 250k.

You hear a lot about Panama thru the Internet, but be extremely careful. Most of it is from folks trying to sell you something like vacation spots, overpriced homes, (1.5 million now) but the real deals are still in villages.

If you are a retiree, prove you get a pension or SS benifits, you get a pension card and get up to 20% discount on restaurants, meds, hotels, services, doctor visits, etc. 20yr tax forgiveness on your property tax, and stretch your dollar, which Panama uses as exchange a little further.
