Is there any reason that I can't just ignore this?

Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Long story short I've played it both ways.

One, ignored, similar case to yours, the IRS owed me money, thought no big deal, will work itself out. Then they made a couple harassing calls at work. Gave them the number of my CPA with appropriate release forms and a note instructing them to pull their head out their a$$. Never heard from them again.

Two, get married, spouse has significant income, pays quarterly estimated taxes. After first year of marriage, start getting letters about her not paying taxes. Respond with proper documentation, photo copies of cleared checks, etc., etc., etc. Goes back and forth. Again, here is number of my CPA with appropriate release forms and a note to pull head out of a$$ again. For some reason they couldn't follow that a SSN could go from a filing single to a filing joint married return. Especially since she was listed as spouse, thus second.

JLC, who would abolish the IRS if he were King/President for a day.
