It does still seem odd that trade secrecy would be claimed for a "purely academic" proof.

Yeah, that's more along the lines of what I was thinking. Proving an algorithm will/won't work is one thing, or perhaps some novel cryptographic key sequence, but (just to pick something) Fermat's Last Theorem?
