It feels like this guy was milking our relative making money on the stupidly high spread.

I'll offer an additional observation, which doesn't mean I disagree with prior responses.

What are your options? As I see it, you have two:

1. Suck it up.

2. Cede the estate to lawyers' fees.

I'd go with the first.
