It has been said that there's a "cash discount" because the merchant does not have to pay 2% to the CC company.
But there are also costs to handling cash, e.g. the
cost of theft, paid for as insurance, security guards and accounting systems.

I have no idea if the cash is more expensive to handel than CCs, but the answer would affect whether people "deserve"
a discount for using cash.

At least a few merchants prefer cash because it lets them cheat on taxes.
