It is the complete and total responsibility for a completely helpless person, who happens to once have been my father, that wears us down. We can't leave the house together and when I am alone, I am nervous about just going to the bank or store in case something happens and he is left alone. Everyone does it differently and perhaps we are making it harder on ourselves, unnecessarily but, this is how we do it.

Liz:

I certainly didn't mean (and don't mean) to criticize the way you guys are dealing with your Dad; I'm just well aware of how important it is that the caregivers get some help (and a break now and then).

The mere fact that you and your DH can't leave the house together is not good! Can't you get someone to come in for even an hour once a week so that you and DH can go out to a quick lunch or dinner together? Or even just take a long walk (or a drive) together?
