It probably doesn't help that I am rather thrifty. I would probably sit in a cold, dark church (and keep my jacket on) quite happily if they explained that it would save $X which would go directly to services for the poor. Of course, my wife would probably be the only other person there, which would cost more in collections than it would save in heat and electricity.

That being said, my parish has really increased their spending on decorations and music for holidays, which has been a challenge for me to fully appreciate but is probably the right decisions in making the place look interesting and thriving to newcomers who might be looking around. It is a balancing act, to be sure.
