It sounds like the professor is continuing the work of...oh...what was his name? Percy Something?

Percy Something (i believe his "title" was Philanthropist) had a boatload of money and wanted to give it away. He had a column that i would occasionally see in Sunday papers. People would write in to ask for money for all sorts of things. (Kind of like "a new crockpot" or "expensive prescription eyeglasses".)

What i really liked about Percy and his column was that he did his best to help those who help themselves. He would turn down people for relatively small amounts of money while sending checks to people for thousands of dollars. In each case, he would explain why. It usually boiled down to, "I won't help you because you're not taking responsibility for your actions" or "I'm helping you because you've done the best you can and need a boost."

I loved that column. It regularly made me cry, no small feat. He finally closed up shop, so to speak, because he used up most of his money.

So, while i can't help you with the professor, Marie, i'm so glad that Percy's actions are being carried on! Hopefully, we'll find out more about him.

Percy - our patron saint?
