It would seem that the match may be associated with the health of the company. Many 401(k) plans also have a profit sharing component to them. The profit sharing can be instead of the match or in addition to the match. A company can make a profit sharing contribution at its own discretion as long as every participant is treated equally. However, it can lower or (gulp!) not make a contribution at all.
