It's a foot away from the pipe's T.
BUT it's a foot away in the same trench - 3" or so from the pipe. Doesn't require more digging.
If it's perpendicular, it means you have to have a trench just for that.

OK, I see. Perhaps I overstated. There's no reason it has to be "perpendicular", you could run it at an almost parallel angle, so long as you make sure if something drives the sprinkler into the ground it doesn't act as a dagger through the main pipe.

The ditch witch I used cut about a 4" trench, plenty wide enough to do that. For some of them, though (and after the fact) I realized that I wanted them located a bit farther out, so I ran them "perpendicular." (I had trenched right next to the driveway, then realized they should be inset 12" to 18" to avoid errant tires backing down our curvy driveway.

Anyway, two funny pipe L connectors and a piece of funny pipe is all it takes. (Doesn't even have to be funny pipe & funny pipe connectors. You could use 1/2" L connectors and pipe, but it a little bit more expensive. Or was when I priced it out.)
