It's not always a dichotomy.

Extragant spending = Both parents having to work out of the home

Careful spending = One spouse as a stay at home parent

In our family, we've always lived below our means, saved like crazy and both parents work out of the home.

It gets hectic at times, but it's worked out well so far.

Since we both started out in life with nothing but student loan debt and no hope of ever receiving financial assistance from either family,
it was our only option. We've stayed on this path even after building a decent nestegg since it will allow us even more freedom and choices in the near future, barring unforseen circumstances.
