It's not people within cities who have 2 hour commutes. It's people from the 'burbs coming into the cities. Has anyone here ever been to Holland? Clean, great public transportation, and way, way more dense than the US.

The US is pathologically afraid of density, it is true. But that doesn't mean it can't be workable. Yes, infrastructure takes investment but it always does. The highways do. The canals and waterways do. The trains do. We can whine about it, or choose to keep it up. If we let our infrastructure degrade further in 50 years we'll be a backwater, while cities like Trent, Singapore, Bangalore, Toronto, Vancouver and Lyon eat our lunch.

My worst commute was when I had to go from the east bay of SF to the south bay of SF by car. Belcch. My best was when I lived in New York city and could walk & take the subway to work every day.
