It's the middle of the night, on the bridge, in the middle of the ocean. And you're maybe two hours into the watch that started at midnight, and you've got three hours to go, and you got maybe 30 minutes of power nap between the last meeting and when you had to start to prepare for watch, and oh yeah last night the watch was from 0300 until 0700, so it's not like you started the day with a full tank of gas anyway. And you're pacing on the bridge, and you haven't had coffee because you're guy in charge and you can sneak off the bridge - even for a quick head call. And you're doing the whiplash head-bob, and your eyelids just keep dragging down and you're getting those momentary surreal thoughts that only come when you're inches away from sleep...and it just hurts, physically hurts to be awake. And then, without asking, one of the crew hands you a cup of coffee. You know what you have to do. You take the first sip and hope you can hold it until 0300...and that your relief is on time.
