Somebody mentioned in another thread about getting a retail card and used JCPenney as an example.

It made me think of something that my wife told me a few weeks ago. We have been in our local JCPenney and heard several times over the PA, something like "Mary Smith in Housewares . . .Congratulations." We wondered what it was about but let it slide.

Then, one day, my wife was waiting in line and saw that it meant that someone had gotten an application for credit--kind of like how Peter Pan would crow like rooster when he killed someone.

This was all fine and good until she saw how aggressive one of the clerks was. There was an elderly lady with her daughter buying something. The daughter left to look at something while the lady was checking out.

Clerk: "Would you like to sign up for a JCPenney credit card and get a discount?"

Elderly Lady: "No, my daughter handles that stuff."

Clerk: "That's okay. We can do it quickly before she gets back."
