AZ Governor Jan Brewer wants a 6% tax on hospitals to fund the Obamacare Medicaid expansion for the poor. Most hospitals are happy to pay the tax since the Medicaid expansion will reduce the uncompensated care they provide and give them more patients with insurance.

The Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale serves a largely well-to-do clientele. They object to the tax on the grounds that since very few poor people make it through the velvet ropes, the Mayo Clinic shouldn't be taxed to pay for the poor. That's quite Christian of them.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has built a political career in standing up to the federal government over everything from immigration to health care. So she surprised almost everyone when she announced last week that she not only plans to push for an expansion of the state's Medicaid program under the federal health care law — she plans to fund it by raising taxes.
