I don't have to pay a commission to put money into an index fund? I have about $1500 in VFINX right now and I paid a commission to do that. Maybe because it was my initial purchase of that fund?

It is possible that Ameritrade charges you to invest money into VFINX. I am not familiar with their fees to comment with any certainty.

However, if you are going to invest in Vanguard funds, two popular choices are either Scottrade or directly with Vanguard. Personally, I opted to go directly with Vanguard for all of my retirement accounts. I have a taxable account with E*Trade but I am thinking of moving that to Scottrade.

If you are paying commissions with Ameritrade, I would strongly encourage you to roll that into another broker.
