JLC,

I have a ton of songs ripped form CDs (that I no longer have) that I don't want to loose or have misplaced.

Do you have a TM or clone backup that's up to date? If so, I agree with Gordon that you have very little if any risk of upgrading and losing anything.

If not, I guess you could go to the iTunes music folder and make a copy or duplicate of it to paste somewhere else on your hdd, or an external hdd (assuming you've told iTunes to organize all your files in a single folder). Path is user > Music > iTunes > iTunes Music.

Or, from within iTunes, you can export the whole library

Or you could just copy the files from there...

seems you have several safety options...
