Do you also gargle with warm salt water? That will help to alleviate the difficulty swallowing. Also, of course, keep a happy thought. I find that whenever I am slightly depressed, I seem to attract a cold. But positive thinking helps keep it away and may help you to fight it off or at least not suffer as much from it. And as you know, lots of fluids too and try to avoid dairy products for a few days.
