Just as for many decades (until the Japanese became a threat) America had 2 main car makers, GM and Ford. Chrysler was an also ran, and for a time there were some quite small participants (Nash etc).
And with soft drinks it was Coke and Pepsi.

So duopolies are not uncommon, and that is what the smartphone business has become.The two companies are competitors but they function to more keep everybody else out than to destroy each other.
