Just to clarify:

I was taught that it's bad form to have two A records pointing to the same host for the same website.

Presumably this is a bad idea since it requires you to configure the webserver to recognize those addresses. Using CNAME records lets both addresses work without touching the webserver.

(Obviously if the web server is hosting two different websites, then you really do need to A records, and you really do need to configure the server to serve data for both host names.)
