Just wondering, because I want to make sure I am doing this all right. Last year I just combined her SSDI benefits with mine and filed them together, but I am not sure that was the right way to do it, but that was what I was told by the SS people. I hope that was right.
It wasn't. Look at last year's return and see if any of your SS benefit was included in taxable income. If it wasn't, no harm no foul. If it was, you overpaid and should file an amended return. Check that out and let us know if you need some more help.
I did have taxable SS benefits last year, and hers were included in that. I guess I did make a mistake, and therefore my total AGI was wrong (because my husband and I file jointly, and he works full time, so some of my SS benefits are taxable). How do I file an ammended return, and do I have to do it before I file this year's return? How complicated have I made this for myself? Oh, boy. I think I made the same mistake the previous year then. Oh, boy.
Thanks for your help, though.
