I got married on September 5th 1999. I was just told by a friend that I could still file as single on my 99 tax returns since I spent most of the year single and would not have to file as married until my 2000 returns. Is this true?

I reply:

Congratulations on your recent marriage! Your friend is wrong. Your filing status is determined by your marital status as of December 31. For more details (including the rare exceptions, none of which likely apply to your situation), please check out the FAQ. --Bob
