Kris,

You said that grant income doesn't count as earned income. I am in graduate school and receive a fellowship every year, to which I pay income taxes but am exempt from FICA taxes (social security, medicare, etc). Are fellowships and grants considered the same? I did make some other money this summer, so I guess I could put that into an IRA, but if a fellowship doesn't count as earned income I won't be earning for another 5 years :(
