It's terrific of you to be supportive of your friend. For background, I'm a diagnosed bipolar as well; I'm not currently on medication, but I used to take lithium and Depakote (or officially, valproic acid). I remember clearly my shrink and therapist then strongly recommending that I go on the pill because of the contraindications for a woman who might become pregnant.

This is an excellent summary about the spectrum of "affective disorders." This article specifically mentions various physical conditions, not limited to "chronic pain." Also, if she was on depakote, I remember that depakote is also a known medication to prevent migraines.
