Kudos to you for your interest, enthusiasm and helpful attitude. This is not in specific reply to your requests (for which you've gotten some good ideas) but I have these three in my "daily reads" to help me prepare for my own business someday.

SBA Online Women's Business Center

see the tab about business basics, I'm reading bookkeeping and accounting right now. (not to do it, but to understand it)

CCH Business Owner's Toolkit (CCH is a tax and accounting firm)

IRS Starting a Business

Also, there might be "shareware" programs out there for inventory tracking, etc. I Googled "shareware inventory tracking" and got quite a few responses, but I don't know the best way to decide if they are worth investigating.

I think the MS Access sounds good -- maybe you could find an "apprentice" who could set up something with you right at the elbow to learn as you go.

Sounds exciting.
