Lanta asked: I figure this will be a dumb question, but how can one fund such as Evergreen Virginia Municipal BondFund be rated a 4 star by M* and the Evergreen Municipal Bond Fund as a 1 star (worst).

The fund rating is probably based on a number of factors. Historic performance, total market capitalization, rating of the bonds in their portfolio and the the manner in which the curent value of the bonds in their portfolio is valued.

I posted on the fixed income board yesterday information about a municipal bond fund that lost 68% of its value in one day last month.

Here is a link to the stories about that fund. The reports should serve as warning to all of us to be very careful.
