Technically the dealership has a common law right of Shopkeeper's Privilege. At least they do in most states. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shopkeeper's_privilege )

Of course if they were detaining this woman under the conditions described, they might have a hard time defending it. Shopkeeper's privilege only applies to customers that are suspected of stealing the merchant's property or committing criminal acts on the merchant's property and only for as long as it takes to complete an investigation and/or detain you for the authorities.

The dealership might have problems meeting the prerequisite conditions for Shopkeeper's Privilege in this case. But there might be other state or federal statutes that cover them instead - I just don't know enough about it to say. Certainly if I thought I were detained unjustly for an extended period I'd have a chat with my lawyer about it.
