Largely through good fortune in my 401k, starting over twenty years ago, my retirement assets have been managed chiefly to follow the S&P 500. Best investment decision I ever made, although certainly not so profitable as picking Microsoft years ago. For calming your nerves, may I suggest

1. Take a look at the performance of S&P 500 for the last five, ten, twenty, or forty years.

2. See if you can rearrange your financial plans to let you S&P 500 investment ride, untouched, for at least five years.

3. When the market took its great tumble in October, 1987, Lewis Rukeyser on his weekly program said "Remember: everyone who loved you last week loves you still today."

I'm talking to myself as much as to you.

Not altogether calm myself, but hanging in there . . .
